Haze measurement of transparent materials

Haze, transmittance and transmission colour — quality control of films, glass, packaging and transparent plastics.

Clarity in numbers

For transparent materials, two parameters matter most: haze — the fraction of scattered light that makes a material look milky — and transmittance, the amount of light passing through. Both are measured with a haze meter to the ASTM D1003 and ISO 14782 standards.

3nh haze meters measure haze and transmittance, and “color haze” models additionally assess transmission colour — important for tinted films, packaging and glass. For light-transmission measurement alone, transmittance meters are used with glass, filters and lenses.

Objective haze and transmittance measurement delivers repeatable optical-quality control and compliance with the requirements of packaging, automotive and electronics customers.

Frequently asked questions

How does haze differ from transmittance?

Transmittance is the total light passing through a material, while haze is the fraction of light scattered at a wide angle — responsible for the "milky" look. ASTM D1003 defines both parameters.

When should I choose a "color haze" meter?

When, besides haze and transmittance, you need to control the material's transmission colour — for tinted films, coloured glass or packaging. Color-haze models (e.g. YH1810) combine all these measurements.
